Program Philosophy

In The Leadership Challenge, researchers Jim Kouzes and Barry Z. Posner describe leadership as a very “disciplined passion” -- full of excitement and fun but, also, exhausting, stressful, and rigorous. John Maxwell in Developing the Leader Within You states simply that leadership is influence. Both agree that there is a difference between management and leadership. Management is about assuring that the objectives of the firm are achieved. Leadership has to do with setting direction and motivating people.

It is with these fundamental beliefs in mind that drives the overall philosophy of our Leadership Program for attorneys:

  • The program must be tied to existing firm values; the skills and behaviors   taught in the program should support operationalizing these values
  • The program should build on a set of leadership competencies unique   to your firm
  • Adults learn best by doing; therefore, the program will be structured   around real work scenarios, and highly interactive workshops

Program Design

Good leaders can become even better ones through the proper use of experiences, education, training, and coaching. Therefore the program design that we recommend addresses leadership development through a combination of facilitated learning, individual learning, on-the-job application, and one-on-one coaching.

Learning Experiences

  • Actual learning experiences will include a combination of facilitated   group sessions (workshops) and on-the-job learning experiences/applications   (distributed basis).

All learning experiences will incorporate both experiential and traditional learning models. We believe participants learn best when they experience and practice new skills.

Coaching sessions take place during and after the training. A quality coaching relationship will encourage effective use and further development of the business development skills taught in the program. Coaches also help attorneys to develop skills of self-observation, self-awareness, self-responsibility and self-mastery. These skills allow the leaders to continue to grow long after the coaching relationship ends. Studies have shown that training and coaching increased productivity by 88%, a significantly greater gain compared to training alone.
